OPEN LETTER TO GORDON BROWN

ON THE GOLDSTONE REPORT:
BRITISH JEWS DO NOT SPEAK WITH ONE VOICE

Dear Prime Minister,

We appreciate your Government’s stated intention to build bridges with the Jewish community in the light of responses to the Goldstone report. To achieve this, it is vital for you to recognise that British Jews do not speak with one voice on this matter.

We welcome the Goldstone Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza conflict as a key document in the upholding of international law in situations of violent conflict, and regret your Government’s failure to endorse the Report and its recommendations at the United Nations General Assembly.

We condemn the vilification of Richard Goldstone, an internationally acclaimed jurist who has made a substantial contribution worldwide to the development and maintenance of international humanitarian law, and his distinguished co-authors.

We note that the preparation of the Report was severely hampered by the refusal of the Israeli authorities to respond to reasonable enquiries or to facilitate access by the mission to Gaza or the West Bank and that it was only Egypt’s assistance which eventually allowed the Mission to gain access to Gaza. We further note that the Report unequivocally condemns not just Israel’s devastation of Gaza but also Hamas’s indiscriminate rocket attacks against Israeli neighbourhoods and does not in any way deny Israel its right to legitimate self-defence. We fully support its recommendation that both parties conduct full investigations into the allegations of war crimes in the Report.

We believe Israel cannot afford, nor should it wish, to exempt itself from the scrutiny of the international community on these matters. We consider that it is the attempt to do so, rather than the Goldstone Report, that is damaging Israel. We therefore urge you to endorse the Report at the next available opportunity.

An Open Letter To David Miliband

From Independent Jewish Voices

Dear Foreign Secretary,

We are writing as concerned Jews who are utterly dismayed by Israel’s actions against the Palestinians.

We object to the misleading representation of this conflict as entirely instigated by Hamas and merely defensive on the part of Israel. Rocket attacks on Israel are unacceptable. But Gaza has been under siege more or less since the unilateral withdrawal of Israeli settlers in 2005, a withdrawal that left Israel in complete control of access by air, land and sea, leaving the Palestinians with no opportunity to create a viable economic life. It was also accompanied within months by an increase of settlers in the West Bank in excess of those withdrawn from Gaza making it clear that at no point was the withdrawal intended to lead to viable statehood for the Palestinians. Ever since the election of Hamas – the result of an internationally authenticated democratic process –  Israel has enforced collective punishment on the people of Gaza, action which is illegal under international law.

We urge you therefore not to accept the Israeli rhetoric which presents this carnage as part of the `war on terror,’ but rather to condemn it as unjust violence that is destroying the prospects for peace, as well as jeopardising the position of Jews the world over. In the interests of a just and sustainable solution to the conflict, the UK government has a key role to play. We therefore urge you to press the incoming US government to modify the outgoing administration’s counter-productive and hitherto uncritical support for Israel’s actions and policies.

Advert published in the Jewish Chronicle, 4th july 2008:

“I feel like they are destroying part of me”

– Mohammed Shawanreh, Palestinian farmer surveying his destroyed olive groves.

Olive trees beautify Ma’ale Adumim

A vast Jewish settlement deep into the West Bank
But the trees, like the land of the settlement,

Were taken from Abu Dis and other Palestinian villages
Hundreds of thousands of olive trees

Have been uprooted by settlers and soldiers
In defiance of Jewish, Muslim and international law

Wrecking the livelihoods of Palestinian farmers
This is Occupation

Advert published in the Jewish Chronicle, 6th June 2008:

What is Jerusalem?

The Israeli government has just announced plans to build nearly 900 new housing units for Jewish residency in East Jerusalem. But what is Jerusalem. Following the 1967 war, Israel annexed not just the 6 sq km of East Jerusalem but an area 10 times that size – an additional 64 sq km including numerous outlying Palestinian villages.

Ever since, Israel has defined these West Bank hilltops as part of Jerusalem. To the rest of the world, the announcement by the Israeli government sends a clear message: relentless expansion in defiance of the Road Map freeze on settlement building.

Is this the way to pursue peace?

Advert published in the Jewish Chronicle, 6th May 2008

60 Years – We wish everyone could celebrate

It is 60 years since the creation of the state of Israel, celebrated by most Israelis and many Jews around the world. But which Israel is being commemorated?

Is it the Israel that, in its Declaration of Independence in 1948, in the wake of the horrors of the Nazi Holocaust, proclaimed that “it will be based on freedom, justice and peace as envisaged by the prophets of Israel … will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex … will be faithful to the principles of the UN Charter … extend our hand to all neighbouring states and their peoples in an offer of peace and good neighbourliness”?

Or is it the Israel that for decades has occupied the territory and lives of its Palestinian neighbours, surrounded them with settlers, barriers and checkpoints, confiscated their land, demolished their homes, uprooted their trees, subjected them to daily humiliations, mass detentions, periodic sieges and deadly incursions, and deprived them of the right to self-determination and freedom that Israel vigorously asserts for itself?

The state of Israel was at one time a major unifying force for Jews of different persuasions around the world – from left to right, from religious to secular. Today it is probably the single main cause of division. In country after country, including Israel itself, public dissent from Israeli policies has become a widespread reality. Informed by traditional Jewish values and concern for universal human rights, a growing number of Jews are openly repudiating the claim of successive Israeli governments to speak and act in the name of all Jews.

In another 10 years, Israel will be commemorating its 70th anniversary. Unless the occupation is brought swiftly to an end, there may be little left to celebrate.

IJV Advert published in The Times, November 19th 2008

TIME TO SPEAK OUT – NOW!

ONE YEAR on from Annapolis, a peace agreement to end the Middle East conflict remains as distant as ever. Settlement expansion continues and Palestinian life under occupation deteriorates dramatically.

Increasing tension within Israel, resulting both from the occupation and discrimination against the Arab minority, threatens the fabric of Israeli society and the political future of both Palestinians and Israelis.

In his Jewish New Year interview, outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert belatedly recognised that “the decision we must make is the decision we have refused to face with open eyes for 40 years”. He then identified the fundamental conditions for peace: “We must reach an agreement with the Palestinians, the essence of which is that we shall actually withdraw from almost all the territories, if not from all the territories . . . including in East Jerusalem.”

With elections immanent in Israel, it is vital that maximum pressure is exerted on the negotiators to ensure that these principles are put into practice without further delay. The election of a new American administration, committed to action on Middle East peace from day one, presents a fresh opportunity for progress towards a settlement.

We, Jews in Britain, affirm our opposition to the continuing occupation and call upon the British government to use its influence in Washington and the Middle East to bring the occupation to a rapid end.
