Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism (JDA)
April 18, 2021 by IJV
Independent Jewish Voices welcomes and supports the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism (JDA). Drafted by an international group of leading scholars on this issue, and signed by over 200 academics in Jewish Studies and related fields, the JDA is a useful tool to help identify, confront and raise awareness of antisemitism in the contemporary world. It is also attentive to issues of free speech, and includes, in relation to Israel and Palestine, examples both of the sort of statements that are likely to be antisemitic and of those which, on the face of it, are not antisemitic. Our founding declaration notes that the battle against antisemitism is undermined whenever opposition to Israeli government policies is automatically branded as antisemitic. Independent Jewish Voices recommends reference to the JDA, or indeed adoption of it, in contexts where a definition of antisemitism, or guidance on the topic, is called for.

IJV response to EHRC report
7October 30, 2020 by IJV
As British Jews committed to working for a just peace between Palestinians and Jews in the Middle East, we are dismayed by the bitterness and division currently raging in and around the Labour Party in the wake of the EHRC report on antisemitism in the Labour Party. These inward-looking arguments do nothing to help the crucial struggle against anti-Semitism and at the same time draw attention and energy away from the plight of Palestinians, which continues to worsen while simultaneously fading as a matter of international public and political concern. We call on everybody in the Labour Party, and also on our fellow Jews in Britain, to seek to move beyond the current dispute and to focus on working together for equal human rights and dignity for everybody in the Middle East.
