ISRAEL AND PALESTINE IN CRISIS: WHAT NEXT FOR JEWISH DISSENT?
An online panel with Peter Beinart & Arielle Angel,
in conversation with Jacqueline Rose & Adam Sutcliffe
Sunday 18th June 2023, online
7.30-9pm (UK)/2.30-4pm (NY)
Jewish dissent is changing.
Unprecedented mass protest has broken out in Israel, opposing a radically far-right government. Jewish mainstream institutions in the UK and elsewhere have publicly expressed unusual discomfort with Israel’s direction. But they stop well short of acknowledging the worsening position of Palestinians, whose own dissent is sidelined or ignored. Yet, Jewish dissidence is gathering strength beyond the establishment, and sometimes within it.
Arielle Angel and Peter Beinart are both leading and vocal commentators who will offer their insight on what is happening. They join renowned writers and thinkers Jacqueline Rose and Adam Sutcliffe in providing analysis and thought on how to respond in progressive ways.
What developments are apparent in Jewish dissent, both in Israel and beyond? What does the current crisis show us about Israel’s claims to democracy? What framings help us move beyond a focus on Jewish vulnerability and harm alone? How does Jewish dissent link to that of Palestinians? What is the response to legal restrictions that may stifle criticism of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians?
This panel discussion, hosted by Independent Jewish Voices, will explore these issues and more, asking how global Jewish communities may be opening up to critique and dissidence, even as the reality seems increasingly beyond repair.
