Palestinian statehood – benefit or threat to Israel?

Guest speaker: Ahlam Akram
London-based Nablus-born human rights and peace activist

Twenty years after the Madrid peace summit, with both sides formally committed to a two-state solution and the Arab Spring entering autumn, is the PLO’s attempt to attain UN recognition timely or foolish, helpful or harmful? Meretz UK is proud to hold a meeting to discuss peace in the Middle East – fortuitously or otherwise, falling exactly on the tenth anniversary of 9/11! •

8pm start at Hashomer House, 37a Broadhurst Gardens, London NW6 3BN •
£5 or £4 members; includes refreshments •

PA President Mahmoud Abbas may well ask the United Nations General Assembly to approve Palestinian independence on 20 September this year – fully 18 years after the White House Lawn signing of the initial Oslo Accords. Israeli and American leaders oppose Abbas’s move. But could both Palestinians and Israelis gain if the UNGA votes “yes”, as expected?

Or might “the events of September” mark yet another setback in the quest for peace? • With her firsthand knowledge of Palestinian politics, her long experience working with Israelis and Palestinians, Jews and Arabs, her close acquaintance with British political affairs, and her many articles in the Arab press, Mrs Akram is well placed to raise some challenging questions – and provide a few thought-provoking answers!
