‘Lasting peace is only possible with Hamas on board’

A letter from 24 leading world politicians was today published in Der Spiegel, calling on the European Union to rethink its policy on Israel/Palestine. “A Hamas recognition of Israel should be the goal rather than the precondition of the peace process”, they write.

The group includes four former Prime Ministers and ten former Foreign Ministers (including one of Israel, Shlomo Ben-Ami). They explain:

“As former international leaders and peace negotiators, we have learnt first-hand that achieving a durable peace requires an inclusive approach. We consider it of vital importance that the international community supports Palestinian unity and avoids any steps that could jeopardise the fragile reconciliation process. In particular, we urge the United States and the European Union to constructively engage with the transitional government as well as with the Palestinian leadership that results from the elections next year. “
